I am an author who writes dialogue and character driven books, with something going on, a fair amount of action and adventure, and a nerve-twitching plot. Vivid descriptions are best left to the reader, in my humble opinion. Writers who spend the first chapter describing the wallpaper in a house where a small bit of action should have taken place, but does not, are wasting their time. Like movies and music, books are there to make your day a better one. I write to make people happy, while asking them to dwell on topics such as injustice, extremism and people scamming the masses.
I like to get to the nitty gritty of the plot and make damn sure that the ending cannot be worked out for as long as possible. Readers pay to be entertained, not made to wait on an inevitable outcome. I admire Waugh (Brideshead Revisited), Hemmingway and Faulks as well as Dickens and a few of the early 20th century classics. I have read Shakespeare and regard his Richard II, as the most beautifully crafted writing in our native tongue. That said, most of my books contain a fair number of expletives and there are scenes that some reviewers have found distasteful.
Ask yourself this question. To prevent 9/11 or the Manchester Arena atrocities, would we have given our approval to our intel people to torture a prisoner, beforehand to stop these events? If you could prevent the untimely death in a terror attack that killed your child, your spouse, or a parent, would you have agreed to our intelligence agencies torturing a fellow human being to prevent it? So, there are a few disturbing scenes in my books, and many swear words, but there is no blasphemy, and never will be. I belong to Christ, simple as that and will never speak his name in anything other than prayer. I owe Him!
I have lived a crazy life and endured seven near-death experiences. I also fell afoul of alcohol and suffered three days of pancreatitis. Booze isn’t sexy or glamourous. In the wrong hands, it is as dangerous as a loaded revolver. Only thing is, alcohol kills slowly, and sometimes, horribly. “Google” the word pancreatitis and you will see the worst pain a human can go through. I begged God to die but am now thankful that I did not and stuck around. Apologies, of sorts, to all American readers. My books are written in UK English, but we shared the trenches in two world wars, so I am sure we can share our common language. God bless you all. Anthony Vincent Bruno
